The standard format is your name followed by your highest relevant degree, then your certifications in order of permanence. For example: Jane Smith, BSN, RN, CCRN. A physical therapist might write John Lee, DPT, OCS. A medical laboratory scientist might write Maria Chen, MLS(ASCP).

Do not list every certification you have ever earned. Include active, relevant credentials. If your BLS and ACLS are current, include them in a dedicated certifications section rather than cluttering your name line.

Why this matters for ATS: Many applicant tracking systems parse the header of your resume to extract your name and contact information. If your credentials are formatted inconsistently or buried in the body of the document, they may not register correctly. Keep them visible, standardized, and immediately following your name.

Use Standardized Job Titles

Healthcare has a vocabulary problem when it comes to resumes. The same role can be called five different things across five different hospital systems. You might be a "Patient Care Technician" at one facility, a "Nurse Aide" at another, and a "Clinical Support Associate" somewhere else.

ATS software matches your job titles against the titles in the job posting. If you held the title "Clinical Nurse I" but the posting says "Staff Nurse," the system might not make the connection.

The fix: Use the standardized or most commonly recognized version of your title. You can note your official title in parentheses if needed. For example: Staff Nurse (Clinical Nurse I) or Patient Care Technician (Nurse Aide). This gives you the best chance of matching keyword searches while remaining accurate.

Research common titles on job boards before you submit. Look at how the majority of postings in your specialty describe the role, and mirror that language.

Build a Credentials and Certifications Section That Pulls Its Weight

Healthcare resumes need a dedicated section for licenses and certifications. This is not the same as your skills section. It should include specific details that recruiters verify.

For each entry, list the credential name, the issuing body, your license or certification number (if appropriate for your state), and the expiration date. Leaving off expiration dates is a red flag. Recruiters will assume expired until proven otherwise.

A well-structured certifications section might look like this:

  • Registered Nurse (RN) — State Board of Nursing, License #123456, Exp. 06/2027
  • CCRN — AACN, Exp. 03/2028
  • BLS/ACLS — American Heart Association, Exp. 12/2026

If you hold certifications in a specialized area like wound care (CWOCN), oncology (OCN), or emergency nursing (CEN), these deserve prominent placement. Specialty certifications differentiate you from a crowded field of generalist applicants.

Balance Clinical Skills and Technical Skills

A decade ago, a healthcare resume could list clinical competencies and call it done. That era is over. Health systems now run on electronic health records, telehealth platforms, and data analytics tools. Your resume needs to reflect both your bedside abilities and your digital fluency.

Clinical skills to consider listing: patient assessment, wound care, medication administration, ventilator management, triage, IV therapy, patient and family education, discharge planning.

Technical skills that increasingly matter: Epic, Cerner, Meditech, or whatever EHR your facilities used. Telehealth platforms. HIPAA-compliant communication tools. Data entry accuracy rates. If you have experience pulling reports, running audits, or training staff on new systems, that is worth highlighting.

List your EHR experience by name. "Proficient in Epic (inpatient and ambulatory modules)" is far more useful to a recruiter than "experienced with electronic health records." Specificity wins in healthcare hiring.

The key is to match the job posting. If the posting mentions Epic three times, your resume should mention Epic at least once. If the role involves telehealth, your skills section should reflect that experience.

Quantify Patient Outcomes and Workload

Healthcare professionals often struggle with the "quantify your accomplishments" advice because clinical work feels hard to measure. But recruiters in this field are trained to look for volume metrics, quality metrics, and efficiency metrics.

Volume: How many patients did you manage per shift? What was your typical nurse-to-patient ratio? How many procedures did you assist with per week?

Quality: Did your unit's patient satisfaction scores improve during your tenure? Did you contribute to a reduction in hospital-acquired infections, falls, or readmission rates? Were you part of a Magnet designation effort?

Efficiency: Did you help implement a process that reduced average discharge time? Did you precept new nurses and reduce their onboarding timeline? Did you contribute to a reduction in medication errors?

Here are some examples of quantified bullet points that work:

  • Managed care for 5-6 patients per shift on a 32-bed medical-surgical unit with a 98% patient satisfaction rating
  • Reduced catheter-associated urinary tract infections by 40% through implementation of a nurse-driven removal protocol
  • Precepted 12 new graduate nurses over 18 months, with 100% retention past their first year

These are specific, measurable, and immediately communicable. A recruiter does not have to guess at your capability level.

Structure Your Resume for Healthcare Recruiters

Healthcare recruiters scan resumes differently than corporate recruiters. They are checking for licensure first, then relevant clinical experience, then certifications, then education. Your resume structure should mirror their priorities.

Recommended section order:

  1. Name and credentials (header)
  2. Professional summary (2-3 sentences, tailored to the role)
  3. Licenses and certifications
  4. Clinical experience (reverse chronological)
  5. Technical skills
  6. Education
  7. Professional development or continuing education (optional)

Notice that education comes after experience. Unless you are a new graduate, your clinical experience carries more weight than where you went to school. New grads can move education higher and supplement with clinical rotations, capstone projects, and preceptorship details.

Keywords That Healthcare ATS Systems Look For

Every job posting is a keyword map. The ATS is scanning for matches between your resume and the posting. In healthcare, the most commonly filtered keywords fall into a few categories.

Licensure keywords: RN, LPN, LVN, BSN, MSN, NP, PA-C, PT, OT, RT, CNA, ADON, DON.

Certification keywords: BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC, CCRN, CEN, OCN, CWOCN, CNOR.

Compliance and safety keywords: HIPAA, OSHA, infection control, patient safety, Joint Commission, CMS, quality assurance, evidence-based practice.

Specialty keywords: These depend entirely on the role. An ICU nurse's resume should include terms like hemodynamic monitoring, ventilator management, arterial lines, and critical care. A pediatric nurse should mention growth and development, family-centered care, and pediatric dosing.

Many healthcare ATS platforms also scan for unit types. Spelling out "Medical-Surgical" alongside the abbreviation "Med-Surg" gives you coverage for both search patterns. Do the same for "Intensive Care Unit (ICU)" and "Emergency Department (ED)."

Common Healthcare Resume Mistakes

A few pitfalls appear constantly in healthcare resumes:

Listing expired certifications. If your ACLS lapsed and you have not renewed it, do not include it. Recruiters will verify, and an expired credential looks worse than a missing one.

Using facility-specific jargon. Your hospital might call its patient tracking system "CarePath" internally, but no recruiter outside that system will recognize it. Use industry-standard terminology.

Ignoring the professional summary. A strong summary that names your specialty, years of experience, and one key strength gives the recruiter a reason to keep reading. "Experienced nurse" is not a summary. "ICU-trained RN with 6 years of critical care experience and a specialty in post-cardiac surgery recovery" is.

Skipping float pool or agency experience. If you worked as a travel nurse or float pool nurse, list it. The adaptability and rapid onboarding skills that come with those roles are valuable. Note the facility types and unit specialties you covered.

Final Checklist Before You Submit

Run through this before sending any healthcare application:

  • Credentials are listed after your name in the correct order
  • All licenses include state, number, and expiration
  • Job titles match industry-standard terminology
  • EHR systems are listed by name
  • At least three bullet points include quantified outcomes
  • Keywords from the job posting appear naturally in your resume
  • The document is saved as a PDF to preserve formatting
  • File name follows a professional format: FirstName_LastName_RN_Resume.pdf
